Location: North American Utility-Scale Design & Engineering Team; Belmont, CA
Job Description:
Provide leadership regarding the modeling, design, and construction of medium voltage (12kV to 69kV) and high voltage (up to 230kV) AC interconnection systems including substation and transmission line designs for utility-scale photovoltaic solar power plants.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
Create substations and MV circuit single line diagrams.
Design grounding system, including the grounding study, split factor calculations according to IEEE standards, work with applicable software to analyze soil resistivity, design the grid and calculate step voltage, touch voltage and earth voltage to evaluate ground grid safety conditions per IEEE codes.
Design substation conduit plan and detailed design, duct banks, cable trays.
Design substation Protection and Control systems, relay one line diagrams, schematic diagrams, and control panel layouts and wiring diagrams.
Utilizing Schweitzer SEL relays (SEL 400 & 300 series relays) and General Electric GE to build Relay one line diagrams schematic diagrams, including; breaker failure and control schemes, bus protection schemes, transformer and capacitor bank protection schemes.
Design control building layout, cable trays and raceways.
Design substation DC and AC systems, sizing batteries, distribution panels, sizing breakers and fuses.
Design substation communication systems, microwave multiplexers, splicing OPGW fibers inside substation yards and utilize ADSS cables to connect substation control building.
Interface with the local interconnection authority (utility) and other key stakeholders (transmission/balancing authority, etc.) to ensure all interconnection design requirements are met and addressed within the project schedule requirements
Driving the generation of complete AC interconnection designs for PV power plant projects, including specifying and managing the required electrical design studies(load flow, step/touch, device coordination, arc flash, voltage drop, etc.), and leading the substation design, transmission line design (if required), permitting drawings (physical layout, single line and three line diagrams), component specifications, sizing calculations, and bills of materials
Managing third-party consultants (e.g., external design consultants and independent testing companies), as needed, to accomplish items 1 through 3, above
Upholding and being an exemplar of SunEdison's culture and standards of performance
Experience Required:
BSEE w/ emphasis in power systems engineering, MS a plus, from an accredited university
PE license a plus
Three to five (3-5) years in AC power systems design; must include significant medium and high voltage (up to 230kV) substation, transmission line, and switchgear design experience
Experience with power system modeling software packages such as SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, EasyPower, or similar
Must demonstrate strong engineering, design, and communication skills, and an ability to work in a dynamic team environment to think outside the box and solve traditional problems in new ways
In-depth knowledge of power system components and sizing methods including their specifications, cost, efficiency, code compliance, performance, and reliability
In-depth knowledge of safety features, grounding, disconnects, SCADA, system testing, and troubleshooting
Well-versed in all applicable codes (NEC, UL, NESC, CAS, IEEE, etc.)
Ability to navigate within AutoCAD version 2011 (or later)
Must be self-motivated, extremely thorough, have excellent organizational skills and professional integrity
Must be able to balance multiple projects while working under tight deadlines
Must communicate effectively in both written and verbal mediums, to internal and external customers
Must be comfortable working in a highly collaborative, non-hierarchal environment that requires ownership of results
